By Mostafa Hosni
Long before the breed became associated with high-society salons and meticulous topknots, the Poodle worked as a rugged, heavy-duty hunting companion. Ancestors of the modern Poodle originated in the marshes and wetlands of Germany, where hunters needed a dog capable of swimming long distances to retrieve shot waterfowl. The German name Pudelhund translates directly to "pudding dog" or, more accurately, a dog that splashes in water. Over centuries, these versatile dogs migrated to France, where local breeders refined the stock. France ultimately embraced the breed, cementing its identity and developing the smaller varieties to serve distinct working roles beyond marshland retrieving.
Understanding this working heritage explains why contemporary Poodles display such intense drive and physical endurance. The breed's historical purpose required three distinct traits, which remain active in the modern gene pool:
* Exceptional swimming ability: Thick, dense coats and webbed toes enabled these dogs to navigate freezing waterways, push through thick reeds, and haul heavy waterfowl back to the riverbank without tiring.

The complete edition includes 40+ comprehensive diagnostic matrices and species profiles.
The Poodle stands apart from most other purebred dogs because kennel clubs do not classify it by working groups or coat variations, but strictly by size. Despite their dramatic differences in scale—ranging from a delicate lapdog to a powerful athletic retriever—the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and the American Kennel Club (AKC) judge all three varieties against the exact same blueprint of proportion, movement, and temperament.
Official breed standards separate the Poodle into three distinct categories based entirely on height measured at the highest point of the shoulder blades, known as the withers.
Test top 2-3cm soil moisture. Gently wipe leaf blades to clear dust and optimize photosynthesis.
Rotate pots 90 degrees for symmetrical growth. Apply balanced dilute nutrient solution.
