Chapter Two
Equipping Your Indoor Growing Station
Selecting the right hardware forms the physical foundation of any residential indoor growing station. Growers must evaluate three primary styles of trays: solid trays, drainage trays, and shallow nursery flats. Each design serves a distinct function within the production cycle, and misusing a tray type leads to water pooling, root rot, or structural collapse under heavy media loads.
Solid trays lack drainage holes entirely. Cultivators utilize these units as bottom reservoirs for bottom-watering techniques or as protective drip pans beneath operational growing trays. When roots expand downward, bottom-watering via solid trays draws moisture upward through the medium via capillary action, keeping the delicate stems and leaves dry and preventing fungal outbreaks like damping-off.
