Chapter One
The Maintenance-First Philosophy: Why Tanks Fail
New hobbyists frequently encounter a persistent marketing myth: the completely self-sustaining, set-it-and-forget-it aquatic habitat. Commercial literature often depicts glass boxes functioning as perpetual motion machines where plants consume all fish waste, water evaporates harmlessly while leaving impurities behind, and the interior cleans itself indefinitely. Reality operates on harsher chemical terms. Aquariums are closed glass boxes. Every gram of food introduced, every trace of mineral added via source water, and every metabolic byproduct remains trapped within that finite volume unless an aquarist physically extracts it.
Consider what happens when owners rely solely on water top-offs to compensate for evaporation. As pure $H_2O$ turns to vapor, it leaves behind all dissolved solids. Hardness minerals, phosphates, and nitrates concentrate over weeks and months.
