Chapter Two
Environmental Management: Controlling the Context
Training success hinges on your ability to recognize that a dog’s excitement level is rarely static. It functions as a barometer, rising or falling based on environmental stimuli. By segmenting your home into specific "Threshold Zones," you create a roadmap for managing arousal before it hits the point of no return.
The driveway serves as the primary initiation point for the Slot Machine Effect. As the entryway to the sanctuary, it is saturated with the scent of your vehicle and the anticipation of your return. For most dogs, the sound of an engine in the driveway triggers the initial dopamine spike. If you interact with your dog while they are jumping during this transition, you are essentially paying out a jackpot the moment they reach the door. This zone requires a policy of neutrality; interactions should remain minimal until the dog achieves a stationary, calm state, effectively lowering the arousal floor before entry.
