Chapter Two
Symptom Decoder: Identifying the Root Cause
Responders often fall into the trap of treating the leaf while the root system suffers in silence. Because foliage serves as the primary visual display for a plant, it becomes the first point of inspection during a health crisis. However, the leaves act as a secondary indicator. By the time a spot, discoloration, or wilt appears on a leaf, the actual biological failure has usually persisted in the root zone for days or weeks.
The root system functions as the supply chain of the organism. It regulates water intake, nutrient absorption, and oxygen exchange. When the roots fail, the leaves act as the warning lights on a dashboard; they signal that the delivery system is compromised, not that the display panel itself is broken. A common error involves applying fungicides or oils to foliage in an attempt to cure a decline that is actually caused by root rot or severe dehydration.
